Growth and Destination Variety:
Yet again over 4 Million Passengers at Nuremberg Airport
In 2024, Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg surpassed the 4-million passenger mark for the first time since 2019: Around 4,028 million people used the airport for business or leisure travel or to visit friends and family. This represents a 2,5 percent increase compared to 2023. "This success is due to the consistently high demand for air travel from the Nuremberg metropolitan region, as well as the high commitment of our employees and the unwavering popularity of Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg," said CEO Dr. Michael Hupe.
Dr. Hupe: "Thanks to the continuous expansion of our route network and the diversity of various airlines, we have succeeded in further consolidating the importance of the airport for the people and the economy of the region. For travelers, the airport has become an indispensable transport infrastructure, a real stroke of luck, thanks to good connections, short distances, and excellent service."
Growing Tourism Traffic
Tourist passengers now account for over a third of the passenger volume in Nuremberg. Here, there was a remarkable growth of 25,4 percent compared to the previous year. This increase was driven especially by the airlines Condor/Marabu and Eurowings. Eurowings had stationed an aircraft at Nuremberg Airport since winter 2023/2024, significantly expanding the number of flights for tourists. Since winter 2024/2025, Marabu, a sister company of Condor, has also stationed an aircraft in Nuremberg, as it did the previous year. The number of aircraft will even be increased by Marabu in the coming summer. Corendon Airlines aswell continues to rely on the Nuremberg location and operates a stationed aircraft all year-round, further strengthening the flight network to popular holiday regions. Various other tourist airlines also expanded their flight offers in the summer of 2024, now including destinations in Turkey, Spain, Egypt, and Tunisia.
In scheduled services, the airport recorded a decline in 2024, particularly noticeable among network airlines. Here, traffic volume decreased by 10,9 percent. The main reason: the loss of three important hub connections to Zurich (SWISS), Vienna (Austrian Airlines), and London-Heathrow (British Airways). The low-cost segment also saw a decrease of 4,4 percent, mainly due to a decline in traffic volume at Ryanair – part of a nationwide trend in Germany, as low-cost airlines are challenged with high location costs at German airports.
In 2024, around 48,600 aircraft took off and landed at Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg. This was 3,5 percent less than the previous year. Compared to 2023, scheduled traffic decreased by 9,2 percent, while flight movements in tourism traffic increased significantly by 23 percent. The reason lies in the stationing of aircraft by tourist airlines and the continued strong demand for holiday travel.
Well-Diversified Market Shares
Looking at all airlines that regularly fly to Nuremberg in scheduled and tourist traffic, well-diversified market shares emerged for 2024. The trend is also towards larger aircraft types with a simultaneously higher load factor, from around 60 percent at the end of the 1990s to more than 83 percent today.
In cargo, there is a positive trend for the first time compared to the previous two years: Both flown cargo as well as the cargo handled in Nuremberg but flown from another airport (trucking) increased by 5,7 percent to around 4,720 tons and by 3,5 percent to around 84,380 tons, respectively.
Innovative Sales
The year 2024 was marked by a variety of activities in aviation sales. In this aspect, Airport Nuremberg was represented at relevant international route development conferences. In addition to participating in these conferences, numerous individual customer visits were conducted. Regular digital meetings on current traffic developments and the airlines' plans for upcoming flight schedule periods were also a fixed part of sales. "The primary goal is to point out existing and future market opportunities to the airlines and to further develop the offers as needed," said Dr. Hupe.
In the ongoing year 2025, Airport Nuremberg expects 4,3 million passengers. The current summer flight schedule 2025 offers around 60 nonstop destinations.
Economic Development
In the reporting year, consolidated revenue of 99,5 million euros (previous year 100 million euros) was achieved. The decline is due to consolidation, as operational activities were outsourced to non-consolidated joint ventures. The annual result for 2024 was around -5,6 million euros.
Cash flow was around 7,7 million euros (previous year 10.4 million), and investments were around 16 million euros (previous year 9 million). These included the renewal of aircraft parking positions and the development of open spaces for a new large PV system.
Company Loyalty
As of December 31, 2023, the FNG Group employed a total of 1,084 employees (previous year 1,079). Dr. Hupe: "Our thanks go to our dedicated employees. Their loyalty to the company and their great commitment have made it possible to handle flight operations smoothly, even during the particularly challenging summer months."
