Better educational opportunities for children in Isuyama

Nuremberg Airport and Leitner Reisen open a school in Peru

Nuremberg Airport and Leitner Reisen, in collaboration with the Reiner Meutsch Foundation FLY & HELP, have successfully completed a school-building project in the Peruvian Amazon region, thereby creating educational opportunities for local children. In May 2026, Airport Managing Director Dr Michael Hupe and Maximilian Klaus (CFO of Leitner Reisen) opened the new school in Isuyama near Puerto Maldonado.

As part of the “Leitner x NUE School Project Peru”, a new school building was constructed, featuring additional classrooms and an integrated nursery. This will give around 90 more children access to education; in total, some 150 pupils will benefit from the educational provision in significantly improved conditions. The number of teaching staff can thus be increased from five to eight. Thanks to the joint commitment of Nuremberg Airport, Leitner Reisen and private donations from the airport management, the new school building has been completed and has now been officially opened.

For many families in this remote region, the school is far more than just a place of learning: it is a central meeting place and a vital building block for their future prospects. The new building provides much-needed space and a learning-friendly environment. The opening ceremony was attended by children, teachers, parent representatives and the mayor of the municipality. Traditional dances were a highlight of the celebration. As a small token from Nuremberg, Dr Michael Hupe brought gingerbread for the teachers and parent representatives. Footballs, colouring books and pens were handed out to the children.

“It was very moving to be able to see first-hand what has been created here,” says Dr Hupe. “The new school opens up real prospects and better opportunities for the future for children and families in Isuyama and the surrounding area.” The long-standing partnership between Leitner Reisen and Nuremberg Airport takes on an additional dimension with this project.

“Travel connects people and cultures. This also brings with it a sense of responsibility. With this school construction project, we want to give something back together and create new opportunities,” says Maximilian Klaus of Leitner Reisen. For Leitner Reisen, this is already the sixth school they have built around the globe in collaboration with FLY & HELP. The Reiner Meutsch Foundation FLY & HELP has been committed to building schools in developing countries worldwide since 2010 and has already implemented more than 1,000 school projects in over 57 countries.
