New logistics sites boost competitiveness

With the official start of construction on Cargo Centre 3 (CCN 3), Nuremberg Airport is continuing its successful growth trajectory in the air freight sector. Together with Albert Füracker, Bavaria’s Minister for Finance and Home Affairs and Chairman of the airport’s Supervisory Board, Nuremberg’s Lord Mayor Marcus König, airport Managing Director Dr Michael Hupe and Ringo Haritz, Branch Manager of GOLDBECK Ost GmbH, the go-ahead was given today for the expansion of the airport’s cargo area. The new Cargo Centre is set to become operational as early as the end of 2027.

“Nuremberg Airport is a key economic driver for the entire metropolitan region. Around 4,300 people work at the site, of whom around 1,050 are employed directly by Flughafen Nürnberg GmbH itself. With Cargo Centre 3, the airport is now investing in modern infrastructure and sending a strong signal for the region’s economic future. The project strengthens supply chains, boosts the competitiveness of Northern Bavaria and consolidates Nuremberg Airport’s position as an important and efficient logistics hub. I would like to thank everyone involved in the project for their great commitment and wish them a successful and safe construction phase,” emphasised Albert Füracker, Bavarian Minister of State for Finance and Home Affairs and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Nuremberg Airport.

Nuremberg’s Lord Mayor, Marcus König, also emphasised the importance of the project: “Cargo Centre 3 is a strong commitment to Nuremberg as a business location. It creates space for growth, strengthens the airport’s role as the metropolitan region’s gateway to the world, and ensures the conditions are in place for businesses, jobs and value creation to remain in our region in the long term.”

Airport responds to high demand

With this new building, Nuremberg Airport is responding to the sustained high demand for modern logistics and handling facilities. Cargo Centre 3 expands the existing cargo area by around 6,200 square metres of gross floor area. Of this, approximately 4,600 square metres are allocated to storage and handling areas, whilst around 1,600 square metres are dedicated to modern office space on the upper floor.

“Cargo Centre 3 will further strengthen the airport’s position as a logistics hub and expand it in line with demand,” says airport managing director Dr Michael Hupe. “With this new building, we are creating additional capacity for our customers and making targeted investments in the future viability of our site. The expansion enables us to respond flexibly to the demands of a dynamic market and to secure the airport’s competitiveness in the long term.”

Positive developments in the cargo business

Over the past few decades, Nuremberg Airport has developed into a major air freight hub. The opening of the first Cargo Centre in 1987 and its expansion with the addition of Cargo Centre 2 in 2003 laid the groundwork for growth. Today, more than 90,000 tonnes of air freight are handled annually at the two existing Cargo Centres. A further increase is expected in the coming years.

Project and development partner CHI

The planned expansion is a logical step towards securing the airport’s long-term capacity. Together with the air freight specialist CHI NUE Cargo Handling GmbH, work on this project was initiated several years ago. During the planning phase, CHI was secured as a key and influential project partner, which will have exclusive use of the new hall and part of the office space. The company is already one of the most important players in Nuremberg’s air freight sector.

Central location on the airport access road

The new Cargo Centre is being built on a site of around 11,800 square metres directly on the airport access road and will complement the existing Cargo Centres 1 and 2 to form an efficient and integrated logistics complex.

In addition to customs and security clearance for air freight, all three cargo terminals offer direct access to the security area and the apron. The short distances between the warehouse, transhipment area and aircraft thus create ideal conditions for fast, efficient and reliable logistics processes.

This enables Nuremberg Airport to sustainably strengthen its capabilities in the air freight sector. At the same time, the optimised infrastructure creates additional capacity and opens up further potential for handling more direct freight connections to and from Nuremberg in the future.

During the planning phase, particular emphasis was placed on flexibility and future-proofing. Where required, the hangar spaces can be expanded to include specialised facilities such as cold stores for temperature-sensitive goods. At the same time, the office spaces are designed in line with modern working environments and enable efficient and sustainable use.

GOLDBECK Ost GmbH is responsible for carrying out the project. “We are delighted to once again be part of a forward-looking project at Nuremberg Airport. With CCN 3, we are creating a functional and architecturally appealing building that is precisely tailored to the needs of the logistics sector,” says branch manager Ringo Haritz.
