More comfort when flying from Nuremberg
Freebird Airlines Introduces Self Baggage Drop Off at Nuremberg Airport
Passengers traveling with the holiday airline Freebird Airlines will now benefit from an additional convenience at Nuremberg Airport. With immediate effect, they can check in their hold baggage independently at the Self Baggage Drop Off counters. Freebird is the first leisure airline at Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg to introduce this service.
In the Summer 2026 schedule, Freebird Airlines will connect Nuremberg with the popular Turkish holiday destination Antalya, operating flights on several days per week to the Turkish Riviera. Thanks to the automated baggage drop system, Freebird passengers will be less independent on off traditional check in counter opening hours. Travelers who have already checked in online can drop off their baggage themselves, saving valuable time especially during peak holiday periods.
“Efficient processes and a positive travel experience for our passengers are key priorities at Nuremberg Airport,” says airport managing director Dr. Michael Hupe. “With Freebird, after KLM and Air France, as well as Wizz Air, a holiday airline is now using our common use Self Baggage Drop Off service for the first time. This is an important step particularly for leisure travelers who value a smooth and uncomplicated start to their vacation.”
How the baggage drop works
The Self Baggage Drop Off system is located in Departure Hall 2 and is centrally positioned along the route from the terminal entrance to the security checkpoint. Clear multilingual on screen instructions guide passengers through the process step by step. After scanning their boarding pass either printed or on a smartphone the baggage tag is automatically issued, the luggage is weighed and the tag is attached by the passenger. Travelers then place their baggage on the nearby conveyor belt, where the boarding pass, baggage tag and weight are checked again before the bag is automatically transported into the sorting system and forwarded for loading.
“The integration of Self Baggage Drop Off is aligned with our continuous efforts to modernize ground handling processes and increase efficiency across our network, with a clear focus on passenger centric innovation. This solution allows for better resource allocation, improves baggage handling and supports shorter turnaround times while further strengthening our service quality and ensuring consistently high service standards in line with the operational principles of Freebird Airlines,” said Erhan Taşkın, Freebird Airlines Director Ground Operations.
The system has been in operation at Nuremberg Airport since 2022 and is gradually being adopted by additional airlines.
