A milestone for the region’s international connections

British Airways connects Nuremberg and London Heathrow for the first time

The airline which has long been on the wish list of many passengers and companies from the Nuremberg metropolitan region will be taking off to London Heathrow, Europe’s largest hub, commencing at the end of March. This provides excellent opportunities to visit the British capital and for worldwide connecting flights via the hub of British Airways, including onward travel to and from the USA. Moreover, this is the first time that all three major airline alliances are represented in Nuremberg: Star Alliance, SkyTeam and now Oneworld (which includes British Airways).

“The Nuremberg metropolitan region is home of many enterprises with worldwide activities, a strong trade fair venue and a high volume of incoming passengers from countries like the USA”, says Airport Managing Director Dr. Michael Hupe. This brings the number of Nuremberg’s hub connections to eight.

“We’d like to welcome British Airways”, says Marcus König, Lord Mayor of the City of Nuremberg. “The connection to London Heathrow means a strong expansion of international connectivity for the city and metropolitan region of Nuremberg. It’s particularly interesting for the trade fair business, but we are also hoping for generally positive effects on both business travel and private tourism in Nuremberg.”

London Heathrow has been the most requested destination by passengers from Nuremberg for years and until now, travellers have transferred at hubs such as Frankfurt and Amsterdam. The last direct connection to Heathrow was more than twenty years ago (during the 1999/2000 winter scheduling season).

“The economy is built on personal contacts”, says Prof. Dr. Klaus L. Wübbenhorst, Chairman for the Economy of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. He believes that connection between Nuremberg and London is a strong sign for the local economy, especially since the pandemic. “Let's use the connection for our export business”, he says, “and invite our guests to come, marvel and stay”.

British Airways will initially operate four times a week and intends to increase to six weekly flights from May 2022. Intercontinental flights include attractive connections to Santiago de Chile, São Paulo and Dubai. As the USA is one of the most important foreign markets for the Nuremberg tourism region, British Airways will optimise connections to relevant US destinations from the 2022/2023 winter season onward. Nuremberg is even better connected to New York (John F. Kennedy International Airport), Boston, Chicago and other top destinations in the United States.

With daily flights from Nuremberg to London, the Greater London area (14.2 million inhabitants) is easily accessible for travellers from the Franconia region.
