Around 788,000 passengers expected at Nuremberg Airport

With the start of the summer holidays, the busiest travel period of the year begins at Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg. During the Bavarian summer holiday season, approximately 788,000 departing and arriving passengers are expected. Passenger traffic is therefore projected to reach the record level of last year. In total, 21 airlines will serve around 55 nonstop destinations from Nuremberg, taking holidaymakers to the most popular vacation regions in Europe, North Africa, and beyond.

Among the largest leisure airlines this summer are Corendon Airlines, Marabu Airlines, and SunExpress, which carry particularly large numbers of vacationers to sunny southern destinations. The busiest travel days are expected to be Monday, August 3, Friday, August 7, and Monday, September 14. On these days, the airport expects around 20,000 passengers each.

Antalya, Mallorca, and Crete in Highest Demand

Once again, Antalya tops the list of the most popular summer destinations, with more than 133,000 expected passengers. It is followed by Palma de Mallorca with around 108,000 passengers, and Heraklion on Crete with nearly 35,000 travelers. The Egyptian resort city of Hurghada also remains highly popular. In addition to these classic destinations, travelers can also discover new routes such as Bodrum (Turkey) and Rabat (Morocco).

If there is no direct flight to a desired destination, travelers can conveniently reach it via international hub airports. Particularly popular is Istanbul Airport, which, thanks to its extensive network of onward connections, especially to Asia, is used by around 42,000 passengers. Frankfurt Airport ranks second, with approximately 35,000 passengers continuing their journeys worldwide with Lufthansa. Attractive connecting options are also available via Paris with Air France and Amsterdam with KLM. In addition, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, the hub of Pegasus Airlines, is increasingly being used for transfers.

City breaks are also enjoying strong demand. Ryanair connects Nuremberg directly with destinations such as London, Budapest, Porto, and many other cities on the Iberian Peninsula. Barcelona can be reached nonstop with Vueling. Meanwhile, Wizz Air, the specialist for Southeast Europe, offers direct flights to destinations including Bucharest, Tirana, Varna, and Skopje.

Around 260 Employees Working Directly with Passengers

To ensure smooth operations during the holiday season, a large team works hand in hand behind the scenes. At the start of the summer holidays, around 120 employees are deployed in passenger services, including check-in and boarding. They are supported by 23 staff members providing assistance to passengers with reduced mobility (PRM service), 16 employees in baggage tracing (Lost & Found), 16 ticketing agents, and 10 airport information desk staff, supplemented by the terminal services team.

In addition, 85 temporary workers support these operations. Altogether, more than 260 employees work directly with passengers to handle their needs.

Airport Operations, the central link between airport operations and airline crews, ensures smooth flight handling around the clock with 53 employees and an additional 10 temporary workers. On the apron and in baggage handling, another strong team is at work: 84 employees sort baggage, 143 staff members load and unload aircraft, 49 employees perform cabin cleaning, 40 employees provide passenger transport on the apron, and 16 employees carry out pushback operations, moving aircraft away from their parking positions.

These areas are further reinforced by 95 temporary workers. The deployment and scheduling of all these employees is coordinated by seven staff members in the central workforce planning department. Together with the airport fire brigade, technical services, traffic supervision, and numerous other specialists, they ensure that travelers can start and end their summer vacations safely, punctually, and stress-free.

Modern Technology for a Relaxed Travel Experience

Just in time for the peak travel season, Nuremberg Airport has comprehensively modernized its security screening process. Thanks to new CT scanners, liquids and electronic devices such as laptops and tablets can remain in carry-on baggage. In addition, liquids may now be carried in leak-proof containers with a capacity of up to two liters. The new technology significantly speeds up procedures and reduces waiting times.

The airport has also enhanced convenience for baggage drop-off. At the self-bag-drop kiosks, passengers flying with Air France, KLM, Wizz Air, Freebird, and Corendon Airlines can check in their own baggage. Multiple language options make the system easier to use and help streamline the process.

New Shopping and Duty-Free Area Invites Passengers to Relax

Passengers wishing to shop or enjoy refreshments before departure can take advantage of the completely redesigned retail and dining concept introduced last year in the area beyond security screening. The new duty-free area, nearly double its previous size, offers international brands, travel-exclusive products, and numerous regional specialties from Franconia.

The offer is complemented by a modern dining area featuring Franconian cuisine, freshly tapped Nuremberg beer, and locally roasted coffee. Additional culinary options with views of the apron are available at the Marché Mövenpick Sandwich Manufaktur.
