Highlights
As the mausoleum of the state founder Atatürk, the Anitkabir is one of the most central and culturally important buildings in Turkey and is both a museum and a national monument. The imposing complex was built six years after Atatürk's death, from 1944 until its completion in 1953. The so-called "Peace Park" and a library are also located on the grounds.
In addition to the almost 4000-year-old citadel, the city's old temples and newer mosques are particularly interesting, for example the Temple of Augustus. Its origins date back to the 2nd century and it was used as a church from the 6th century until the Middle Ages.
The Kotacepe Mosque is considered one of the largest mosques in the world. It can accommodate up to 24,000 worshippers. The visit is free and the huge dome, detailed decorations and marble cladding are impressive.
