Airport Nürnberg Strikes the Balance –
Growth and New Summer Destinations

In 2009 the development of Airport Nürnberg was characterized by the global financial crisis affecting all national and international parts of the economy: The number of passengers dropped by 7.1 % to 3.97 million passengers. Nonetheless the Airport succeeded in limiting the effects on business results by introducing countermeasures early on. With the new summer flight schedule complemented by new attractive nonstop destinations and initiatives in the non-aviation sector the Airport’s management wants to embark on a growth course. ‘New destinations, more offers and higher capacities in scheduled and holiday flights will create a positive development,’ the Airport’s Managing Director Karl-Heinz Krüger says looking optimistically into the future.

Traffic development
Corresponding to the reduced offers by airlines, passenger numbers declined by 7.1 % to 3.970 million in total in 2009 (previous year: 4.274 million). In fall scheduled flights already saw a slight recovery. Holiday traffic, however, showed a clear decline during the second half of 2009, a deferred reaction to the economic crisis.

Scheduled and holiday flights
For scheduled flights a reduction by 9.4 % to 2.055 million passengers (without transit) was recorded. In 2009 the most important airlines offering scheduled flights at Airport Nürnberg were Air Berlin, followed by Lufthansa and SWISS, KLM, Air France, Turkish Airlines and others.

While tourist traffic remained stable until June, private travellers clearly held back in the following months leading to a decline throughout 2009 by 4.7 % to 1.851 million passengers (without transit). As a consequence of lowered demand, hub traffic was reduced by Air Berlin, as were the offers of most tourist airlines.
Air Berlin was, once again, the largest tourist airline in Nuremberg, followed by TUIfly, Sky Airlines, SunExpress and others.

With regard to tourist destinations, the reduction in demand affected the Canaries, the Balearic Islands, Turkey and the Greek
islands. Tunesia and Italy, on the other hand, were in greater demand as destinations.

Air freight / cargo
The air freight transported declined by 18.3 % to 10,609 tons. The total volume of air freight including trucking thus dropped by 23.4 % to 80,159 tons.

Economic development
Developments in 2009 led to a considerable drop in the company’s turnover due to less traffic. ’The early introduction of cost-saving measures made it possible for us to prevent full impact of the turnover losses on the results,’ Managing Director Harry Marx states. The company’s annual result in 2009 is – 4.8 million Euros.

In 2009 more than 1,000 people were employed at the Flughafen Nürnberg GmbH (FNG) and its subsidiaries. At the airport site there is a total of about 4,000 employees.

Investments
In the business year 2009 about 11 million Euros were invested in the further development of the airport. Besides completing the office building, the most comprehensive building projects include the already implemented measures for reconstructing the runways which essentially date back to the year of the airport’s foundation in 1955.

In a continuous process the development of the non-aviation sector was advanced. The airport’s attractivity was also enhanced by establishing other gastronomic facilities (Kalchreuther Bäcker Bakery Shop, McDonald’s, Marché Bakery), as well as extending the range of services offered, from new parking possibilities to online travel services.

Prospects
Management is reckoning with a growth in traffic of about 3 % for the year 2010. ‘We are proceeding from the assumption that the market will recover in 2010 and that we will be able to recover our original tendency to grow,’ Managing Director Karl-Heinz Krüger says.

A contributing factor will be the new summer flight schedule offering a broad range of tourist destinations and attractive new non-stop destinations due the strong partnership with Air Berlin: among them the Greek destinations Araxos and Kalamata as well as Heringsdorf on the Baltic island of Usedom. Rome is on offer again, but also Milan with new daily fringe connections for business travelers and trade fair guests. Vacation travelers will find the summer specials particularly attractive: Venice, Nice and Sylt will be serviced during the high season between the middle of July and the middle of September, and there will be additional flights to Split. On their national networks Lufthansa and Air Berlin will offer even greater flexibility for business and private travelers by creating greater seating capacities.

The Airport’s Management will continue to focus on its important strategic aim of expanding the airport in order to create an International Meeting Point in the metropolitan region of Nuremberg with the planned new hotel and conference complex ‘Airport Business Center’ at its core. A direct connection to the federal autobahn A 3 is, so Krüger, very important ‘so that we will be accessible to all people and industries in the metropolitan region faster, better and more safely’.
